01 - Beat together softened butter, heavy cream, and peppermint extract in a mixing bowl until smooth.
02 - Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing continuously until a soft, pliable dough forms. Add additional powdered sugar by tablespoon increments if too sticky.
03 - Separate dough into portions if using food coloring. Add a few drops to each and knead evenly until colored.
04 - Dust a clean surface with powdered sugar. Roll dough into 1/2-inch balls and gently flatten with a fork or back of a spoon.
05 - Arrange candies on parchment-lined tray. Allow to dry at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours until firm.
