Red White Blue Ice Cubes (Print version)

Colorful layered ice cubes with blueberries, coconut and strawberries to brighten chilled beverages at gatherings.

# Ingredient List:

→ Fruit

01 - 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
02 - 1/2 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped
03 - 1/2 cup fresh coconut meat or unsweetened shredded coconut

→ Liquids

04 - 1 cup coconut water
05 - 1 cup natural blueberry juice
06 - 1 cup natural strawberry juice or cranberry juice

# How To Make It:

01 - Wash blueberries and strawberries thoroughly. Hull and chop strawberries. Prepare coconut meat or shredded coconut as needed.
02 - Fill each ice cube compartment one-third full with blueberries. Pour in blueberry juice just to cover the berries. Place tray in freezer and freeze for approximately 1 hour until firm.
03 - After the blue layer freezes, add a layer of coconut meat or a sprinkle of shredded coconut into each compartment. Pour coconut water to cover coconut, filling the next third of each cavity. Return tray to freezer for 1 hour until set.
04 - Distribute chopped strawberries over the set coconut layer. Fill the remainder of each compartment with strawberry or cranberry juice. Freeze until ice cubes are fully solid, about 2 additional hours.
05 - Once completely frozen, remove ice cubes from tray. Use to chill lemonade, sparkling water, or cocktails for a festive presentation.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • Your drinks will look like something from a fancy summer party—no extra fuss needed.
  • It’s secretly a fun way to sneak more fruit into any celebration without anyone noticing.
02 -
  • If you rush the freezing between layers, you’ll end up with blended stripes instead of crisp colors.
  • I once used too much juice and found the cubes stuck stubbornly, so don’t overfill past the edge.
03 -
  • Run the back of the tray under cold water for a few seconds to release the cubes with ease.
  • For pure white coconut layers, avoid coconut milk with additives—it can tint the layer ivory.
